Bargain buy.

I got these today. Two for £5 from Asda... A bargain I think. (hope)

I've always loved Japanese maple. Can anybody give me an idea how big they'll grow in a pot?

As small as you want it to be by careful pruning.

Re: Bargain buy.

They look nice and healthy Carol, it was indeed a bargain.
I'm not sure, but I've a feeling the leaves scorch easily in hot sun. Is that right Cass? So watch where you position them Carol.

Re: Bargain buy.

Thanks for the advice. I'll be very careful where I position it.
What I was wondering was - Is it ok to plant it in a massive pot to avoid future disturbance or should I use a smaller pot - just a bit bigger than the one it's in now as the book says?

What would you do?

Re: Bargain buy.

Instructions often tell us to plant in pots only one or two sizes bigger than the existing one.
I used to help out at an organic nurseries a while back, and the lovely man there used to say to do this because they get fresh food and nourishment in new compost each time you repot, makes sense to me.
I always think plants in flower beds are much more independent and can send their roots out looking for what they need, but when confined in pots and tubs they are entirely at our mercy for food. Bit like keeping an animal in a cage all its life.

Re: Bargain buy.

Thanks Mups. That makes sense.
I've got a couple of nice clay pots that aren't ever so big, I think I'll use them then.
