Pockets sewn up (why)?

I bought a very nice reefer jacket today in the sales but why were the pockets sewn up? I have found this with other items of clothing i have purchased over the years so why do they do this?

I think its so that if anyone tries the jacket on they cant put their hands in the pockets and make them "baggy" if you see what I mean...it just keeps the clothes in tip top condition for the buyers.

It's so they can press the garment more easily in production. Then they hang on the hangers better too.

Re: Pockets sewn up (why)?

Interesting question which was worthy of a quick Google. Results I found stated that pockets are sewn up for different reasons:

1. It keeps the jacket in tight shape during its creation especially for the pressing process

2. It keeps the jacket looking sharp on a shop rail

3. It keeps dirty customers hands out of the pockets which would otherwise make them baggy.

Doc, Perhaps, the suit was meant to dress a corpse in for the coffin so they wouldn't be able to take their money with them?!!

Re: Pockets sewn up (why)?

I had the same thing happen to me years ago when i bought a trouser suit, i thought they must have forgotten to snip the thread to release the pocket.. Never mind i did it myself but had to be careful.
