At the end of the day the offence committed was stealing the car. The magistrate had no other course of action to take.

Yes, and they were all complicit in that theft possibly thinking it was `a laugh`. I believe the deaths of the other passengers has prevented future crimes being perpetrated. It's a shame the driver didn't die in the crash also as I don't think he'll learn from his action.
