Run out of tablets

My GP asked to see me last week, no appointments available so I asked for a repeat but as a new addition my latest meds weren't available on repeat. So interesting couple of days I ran out yesterday and have an appointment tomorrow afternoon.

If I have consequences I am wondering who gets the blame ? Receptionist doing her job as she's told to, GP not making sure I could access an appointment or meds ? Or just put it down to a failing NHS ?

Re: Run out of tablets

Last time I ordered a repeat prescription online, I gave the surgery 7 days notice rather than the requested 2 working days.
I looked online and it said 'prescription accepted' so I went to pick it up on the friday only to find one drug hadn't come in.

I only had 2 days supply left so ran out before the pharmacy opened on Monday and spent a worrying day without the medication which should not be discontinued abruptly. I can't ask to take the prescription elsewhere, few pharmacies stock it .

I said I would order even earlier next time and the pharmacy nurse said if I did that it could be rejected.

All rather unsatisfactory.

Re: Run out of tablets

I had that when I went to collect a repeat prescription last month. I'd allowed a week for them to do it.

No prescription written.
A check on the computer revealed that inexplicably someone had added a note next to my file saying .. No Longer Needed.

I was lucky .. I told them I'd sit and wait 10 minutes whilst they sent it through to the Doctor so he could write me one.

Julie My GP's surgery get us to ask for repeat prescriptions online and they are ready to collect 2 working days later at my selected pharmacy.
The online request form has a small box where you can request other meds which are not on your repeats list. You just type the name of the meds in the box, explain why they are not on your repeats and the doctor will authorize,or tell you why they have been refused.
If the meds you needed were prescribed by your doctor, he would be responsible if you needed them and he had refused them.
I am appalled by how many people are not getting a satisfactory prescription service!

Same as me Twink, I order online too and they are always at my chosen pharmacy in 3 days and often less. It’s a bit different this month though as I have new drugs to take and it’s too early to order with the rest so will have to do two prescription requests each month in future.

Ours was until recently a failing practice with no regular doctors, I must say I think there have been huge improvements. I called in yesterday lunchtime as I was worried about one of my drug changes and I got a same day afternoon appointment!

I just go to my doctors and give the repeat bit from my last prescription and get a new prescription the next day.

Re: Run out of tablets

A couple of years ago, my Chemist ran out of Insulin and I had none left, but you know what they did, they got me to telephone all the different Chemist in the areas to find some, of course they had all ran out, I caused a big stir in my Chemist and finally they got me some which I had to go back in the afternoon for. But why should I have to do the running around when its their fault?

Re: Run out of tablets

Julie, depending on the meds, your pharmacy may prescribe for the two days

I've had to go this route in the past when on tablets that cannot be stopped cold turkey
