Finding a new job in your 50s

Is it even possible ?

My husband has been at same company for years loved his job, still does but new manager making his life miserable.

So he wants to leave.

But looking around only briefly it's not going to be easy getting another one at his age 58. Especially as he's a manual worker with health problems.

So why is it we are told we are living longer, retirement being made later but employers don't want us ?

Re: Finding a new job in your 50s

I managed to get my present job at the age of 55, but it was only because a friend recommended me for it I don't think I would have been taken on in normal circumstances, now they can't get rid of me.

If your husbands manager is making life difficult for him this may be a case of constructive dismissal. Tell him to make a note of any unreasonable demands with time and date in case things come to a head.

It's not easy, but it's not impossible either

A lot of shops for example like the older employer because they are more reliable. B&Q for instance have a policy for employing older people

The trick is to apply for just about anything he feels he is capable of, even if he's no experience in that role. Life experience transfers readily. Since I left the NHS I have had a variety of jobs, Market researcher, stock controller, bar maid, waitress, cook, shop work, vegetable processor. I'll try anything

Problem is they are running down the company we believe, it was a family firm bought out by investors, they are making life hard for everyone and as people leave they don't get replaced, it's sad to see the company go down like this but apparently they are trying to make it run at a loss for some reason.

Hi

Getting a new job is difficult if you are not prepared to move.

We can't afford to move swim, so that's off the menu immediately. Both health and family ties and financially we are here and will stay here. Our rent now is minimal as we've paid off our mortgage so we wouldn't even be better off finding cheaper accommodation.

Well, I wouldn't bother applying for any Labour party jobs if I was him.

And do what ? Self employment fine if you have a business idea but not if you haven't IMO

Dog walking- gutter cleaning- oven cleaning- gardening- drive cleaning. That is just off the top of my head
Friends of mine do dog walking and he earns more than when he ran is own engineering business employing several people

Just need to think out of the box. Look at what others are doing and do it for yourself
