Silly Fools.

These People really get my Temper Up. Living in the Highlands all my Life I have a Great Respect for them and their ever Changing Weather and Conditions. Then these Silly Ass's waltz up here and our Men have to Risk their own Lives in all Weathers when they get into Trouble. ggrrrr.

Hillwalking warning over smartphones after Cairngorms Rescue Police have issued a warning to hillwalkers about using smartphones for navigation after a spate of rescues.

Grampian Police said there had been four separate incidents within the Cairngorms since Friday.

The latest saw 14 hillwalkers being led to safety early on Tuesday after getting into difficulties in bad weather on Ben Macdui.

Members of Grampian Police, Braemar and Aberdeen mountain rescue teams helped, with a helicopter from HMS Gannet.

'Personal responsibility'

Ch Insp Andrew Todd, co-ordinator of mountain rescues in Grampian, said: "I have been involved in mountain rescue for nearly 20 years.

"Whilst technology can and does play an important part in raising the alarm or assisting navigation, it appears we may be about to witness a marked increase in the complete reliance of smartphone apps to navigate some of the UK's highest mountains.

"What is particularly concerning is that the individuals who are relying on this apparently inappropriate technology often do not possess even rudimentary mountain navigation skills.

"This is putting their lives at risk, and whilst Scotland's mountains are there for all to enjoy, there is a personal responsibility on those who venture into the mountains to do so only when properly equipped and skilled."

Re: Silly Fools.

I have traveled through the Cairngorms on route to Braemar.
It is a beautifully wild place and I can see how people with little experience of hill walking could get into difficulties.
It's irresponsible to ignore the warnings of those with experience and authority and put not only themselves but others at risk.

Re: Silly Fools.

Years ago I spent a lot of time working in Cumbria regularly using the Hardnott and Wrynose passes in winter in a Land Rover equipped with full winter gear.
It amazed me the number of motorists that ignored the warning signs and attempted the pass in winter weather in their hatchbacks.

I dragged one bloke off the road onto the verge. He was on a section of road about one in four where he was sliding sideways on the icy road TOWING A CARAVAN!...How the hell it didn't topple over and take him and his family down into the valley God only knows.

Some people have no sense whatsoever.

Re: Silly Fools.

There really are some gawping, gormless beggars around aren't there?

When they do get into strife up in the hills and mountains, they call into the equation air ambulances and RAF air rescue, good men and women who put their lives on the line because of some silly buggers ill-equipped and with little knowledge of what lies ahead of them. They probably don't even carry a compass.

One ordinary ambulance/paramedic call-out for a person "at risk of life" costs £300 a time, so what it costs for helicopters and crews doesn't bear thinking about.

If an ambulance is required to take a person to or from hospital/home, that costs £80 a shout each.

I do believe that people like the ones Roxy is talking about now receives a bill for payment, and rightly so, but it just shouldn't happen.

I have nothing but praise for the men and women who work within the rescue services. They put their lives on the line for people who do idiotic things. They are brave people indeed. And many lives would be lost without them.
