Ooh, I just had a bit of a scare.

I was just looking at that latest poor old lady, when my lights suddenly went off, and I was plunged into darkness.

Fortunately I discovered it was just the light bulb blew. Phew.

The man arrested for the death of the 100 year-old pensioner has been formally charged with manslaughter. It would appear that the killer is also Polish judging by his name?, I wonder if he knew of her in the Polish community?

There probably were a lot fewer.
But there again, the population wasn't the same as it is now.

Indeed. So we need to compare rate. Usually per 100,000 of the population.
I compared 1938 and 1970. Before and after the abolishment of capital punishment. The rates are the same.

I don't think it is just about whether the death penalty is a deterrent, it is more about when somebody has killed it is much easier to do it a second or third time......which puts more innocent people at risk!

The average life sentence, of 15 years, means that keeping a murderer in prison costs £705000, and that is assuming they are well behaved and need no further discipline.

I don't know what others think, but I certainly don't want to contribute to that £705K only to see them come out again and kill somebody else

I also feel that caring for surviving victims of attempted murder, cost the NHS a lot of money, so it probably cost us a lot more than just board and lodging for these criminals.

Sorry Swim, the do gooders have worked hard to get criminals much better treatment in prison, so you can forget any possibility of Britain ever using the Polish method of punishment..... and anyway, isn't that just about taking revenge rather than teaching that crime doesn't pay?

Perhaps we could just send them to third world jails .
They will by much cheaper and the third world countries need the money.

Weren't the government going to build a massive jail some where in India? I forget where I read that but it was fairly recently.

I'm out of step again here because I don't agree with capital punishment I would be in favour of locking them up and throwing away the key though with no privileges.
