That's awful isn't it, I'm not even sure a loo is a place to have to do that, surely places can offer a better place to do it ?

Re: Stoma-versary

@Muddy. You would have absolutely no idea when a young person in their twenties had a hidden disability, and there lies the problem, it is hidden! Visible disabilities elicit no remarks, but if you see what one would consider a young vibrant healthy individual using disabled toilets, that is when unpleasant comments are made. People with stomas simply cannot use a normal toilet.

I have a young friend who is a model and proudly shows off her stoma bag in photos (wearing a bikini) simply to show other young girls with Crohn's how their lives can be transformed. She too has been featured on the BBC website.

That's brave of her ceecee, I was asked to show my mastectomy scars to students in hospital I found that deeply difficult, so I can imagine the bravery needed to what she did.

She now helps run a website called Purple Wings to raise the awareness of young people with Crohn's and has recently married. They had a photo shoot of at least ten women with stomas, which is on the front page of PW website.

It's not the best place but he was very self conscious when he first had to have injections so we used to hide him and of course we had to have access to water.

Re: Stoma-versary

There is a little cafe down town here, and there is only room for one toilet, so they made it a disabled one. Everybody has to use it , no choice.

Re: Stoma-versary

At least they have the facilities Mups, that is the important thing, not whether the general public use it. Those of us with a stoma are given a Radar key to access locked disabled loos and a card, for use in any shop or place that does not have a public loo, in order to be able to use their staff toilets. I have never had to use the card fortunately.

Yes I can understand that, it just seems to me many people must have to self inject etc it would be nice to think some places might think of giving them a place to do it that was more sanitary.

When my mum had her injections into her stomach we used to find a local hospital or GP surgery and ask if we could do it there. Most were really helpful.

When I worked in the Diabetes Centre (20 years) many of our patients would inject into their thighs straight through their trousers.

They suggested that with my epipen, I found it very difficult much easier to do it against skin. Might just be my tough old hide I guess or voluminous petticoats !
