That's the very first (and last) tune I learned to play on the tin whistle-fact.

Remember this from Spike Milligan ?

I'm walking backwards for Christmas,
Across the Irish Sea,
I'm walking backwards for Christmas,
It's the only thing for me.
I've tried walking sideways,
And walking to the front,
But people just look at me,
And say it's a publicity stunt.
I'm walking backwards for Christmas,
To prove that I love you.
An imigrantal lad, loved an Irish colleen
From Dublin Galway Bay.
He longed for her arms,
But she spurned his charms,
And sailed o'er the foam away
She left the lad by himself, on his own
All alone, a-sorrowing
And sadly he dreamed, or at least that's the
way it seemed, buddy,
That an angel choir for him,
an angel choir did sing.

Ah, dear SPIKE..............a tormented genius.

My favourite line from Puckoon some 40 years ago. "My what a spotty bum you've got"

Spike Milligan Stand Up Jokes

After five days in hospital, I took a turn for the nurse
.
I have the body of an eighteen year old. I keep it in the fridge.

I don't mind dying. I just don't want to be there when it happens.

Is there anything worn under the kilt? No, it's all in perfect working order.

Spike Milligan: 'How are you at Mathematics?' . Harry Secombe: 'I speak it like a native'.

All men are cremated equal

Many people die of thirst but the Irish are born with one

Re: Robert's Poems (Part 2)

For those who just got left behind!

When all of your contemporaries
And all the stars you knew
Have all passed on; it’s then you know
They drew short straws ‘fore of you!

When there's no one left to say to you
Remember when we passed this way
Then ya know you’re just way out in front
And it’s getting lonelier by the day!

So get out all those old photos
And have just one last look
Cos ya can bet for sure as damn it
Ya name is written in the book!

It’s like waiting at the station
And you think you’ve missed ya train
And the station masters shut up shop
And you think you’ve gone insane!

They invite you to their parties
And smile as they pass the plate
And all you see are moving lips
Just talkin at fast pace!

So turn off that old hearing aid
Enjoy the peace; give one last wave
The world that you once knew and shared
Has simple moved on ten more squares!

Re: Robert's Poems (Part 2)

This poem is too near to the truth for comfort. I have lost loads of friends and family in recent years. To use a cliche,

I am doing more things for the last time & less things for the first time

Excellent poem, but I am now depressed. What power there is in the words of a poet.

oh dear RJ you've got me goin again - better get out the tissues!

thanks for the opening lines!!

On my way!

I am doin’ more things for the last time
And less things for the first
I’ve been around for too damn long
So I’ll jump up on the hearse

I asked for one with horses
And what a sight it is up here!
I never realized till I got on board
I can see the whole goddam earth!

There are those who are shedding tears
And kids waving flags for all their might
They are shouting we loved grandpa/ma
And by jove they got it right!

There are plumes of smoke keep billowing
From fighting on both sides
The widows and the orphans
Shed tears from blackened eyes

The rich nations are getting richer
And the poor racked with disease
It is spreading like a cancer
Ebola in the breeze

I think we’ve all stopped caring
Maybe I’ve got it wrong
Did we get caught up in a rat race?
And just sing the $ song?

Well I’m on my way
Have had my say
Let’s get horses climbing upwards
For star spangled holiday!

Re: Robert's Poems (Part 2)

Well done Gumbud. Had a good laugh at Spikes one liners RJ thanks, God 'tis a curse to be born with a thirst.

On the reccomendation of my good friend and spiritual adviser Gumbud, I have rebooted myself back to the leisure centre, sorry, section. Now for something that may be to mankind’s advantage and give us all a better seat at the big picture.

We got a lot of atheists on the forum, love ‘em or leave ‘em but never ignore ‘em.
Yes we get quite a lot of believe it of not.
Dave Allan used to say may your God go with you, say that today and someone will take issue.

As I casually strolled up to the local my mind was deep in thought, why do some believe and others don’t, it was very dark as I passed old Mrs Flynn’s house on the corner of the road, suddenly a bright flash half blinded me and I was almost struck to my knees St. Paul style, (except this was hardly the road to Damascus, just the usual trip to the "Harp and Shamrock" lounge bar) then from behind Mrs Flynn's golden privet a beautiful angelic voice sang out to me.

“Three six nine the goose drank wine, the monkey chewed tobacco on the streetcar line, the line broke, the monkey got choked and they all went to heaven in a little row boat”

Her eight year old granddaughter was behind the bush with a flashlight, but what a fantastic way to explain the meaning of life, now doesn’t that just about clear up any doubts you ever had? oh God thank you, I’m so happy to know the secret of it all.

Re: Robert's Poems (Part 2)

Gumbud, your talent is onwards and upwards. It has inspire me to write again after a long dark night of the soul. Mind if I print some of your poems for my LIFE SCRAP BOOK? You ought to © them. Our little group is lamp to me & I don’t want to consign this period of creativity to the unreliable vagaries of memory.

Jem, you remind me of the late & priceless Alastair Cooke, doyen of journalists & grand old man of broadcasting, His weekly LETTER FROM AMERICA on Sunday morning ran for 58 years on Radio 4. Delivered in his resonant, sometimes world weary, always laconic & trustworthy voice.
Gathering his comments from a lifetime of walking and talking with captains and kings, heads of state, seemingly unrelated facts were drawn together in a sweep of rhetoric genius to a conclusion that embodied all that had gone before.
