Grandma's Remedies

The Victorians seemed to have a remedy for any ailment.

One that I remember my friend using on her children every time they grazed their knees , was a sugar and soap poultice. It worked every time too.

I eventually used it on my children with the same results.

I don't understand how or why it works, but it does.

Re: Grandma's Remedies

My mother used to make a bread poultice to put on our fingers if we got a splinter in them. It can also be used on boils and spots to draw out any infection .... as far I can remember, it worked to.

Re: Grandma's Remedies

When I was a very young kid I had some terrible warts on my hands , my Aunt suggested I try rubbing the warts with some raw meat ( in my case it happened to be mince meat) and then burying it in the garden which I did the idea being that as the meat rotted the warts would also rot away and indeed they did,
within 3 months my hands were wart free.

My mum did the soap and sugar poultice too.
From what I remember it did the trick.
I also vaguely remember a bread and milk one, but can't recall what it was used for.

Man who was a neighbour of my Grandmother had pneumonia very badly. Gran made a mustard and boiling water poultice and slapped it on his back - it cured the pneumonia!!!
