Exceeding speed limit by over 100kph

Queensland police pulled over a P Plate driver for travelling at 215kph in a 110kph zone.

The 20-year-old driver, who is on a Queensland provisional licence, was caught allegedly travelling at 215 kilometres per hour in a 110 kph zone on the Flinders Highway at Torrens Creek on December 28.

Police said the Holden Commodore driver was issued with a high-range speeding fine, which includes a $1,177 fine, the loss of eight demerit points and an automatic six-month licence suspension.

Again the punishment was not enough. Although there are no roads here that anyone could get close to that speed, a serious speeding offence such as that would have meant a goal sentence , loss of licence for probably 12 months plus a similar amount of fine , and the loss of licence would have been on the spot, get walking .

(Australia) A plastic square sticker consisting of a large red letter P on a white background, placed on a vehicle to indicate that the driver only has a provisional driver's licence.

so that makes it worse as he was only a learner driver

After passing their L driving test new drivers have to put Red P Plates on their car to indicate they are new drivers. They have stricter speed and zero alcohol restrictions imposed on them and less points to lose on their licence. After one year they can then take a knowledge test to get Green P Plates for an additional two years after which they take a further knowledge test to get a full licence.

P Platers also have restrictions on engine size for example they cannot drive a V8 and passenger restrictions after certain hours. Varies from state to state. P plates were introduced to try to stop young people killing themselves and each other on the road quite so often.

One thing you can be sure of is that if you are overtaken by something like a Suzuki Swift zooming past in the inside lane it will be a female P plater driving.

P platers are not on a learner's permit they have taken and passed their driving test after completing 150 hours of (logged) driving accompanied by a full licence holder. They then go on a provisional driving licence for three years with restrictions outlined above.

here in southern ireland you must put a L on your car then once you have passed your driving test you must display a N plate (N for novice) this N plate must be displayed for 2 years after passing your test. any convictions for driving such as speeding using mobile phone not wearing seatbelts ect ect then during your N plate points given are doubled.

A good rule Bruce - it's a pity such a scheme isn't implemented over here where `P` plates aren't compulsory.
