At last

Finally, after what seems like an eternity we are about to pay off our mortgage, the money from the endowment came through yesterday, and with our savings ( to make up the shortfall that most of these mortgages have) we can pay the outstanding amount, and a bit left over, yipee. Just need to dot the I,s and cross the t,s and then its done,

Re: At last

Apart from still paying the rent (a whole £219/m) on my shared ownership flat, I've been mortgage free for 12 years: used my voluntary redundancy money to pay mine. Can't believe how time has flown by.

Re: At last

Seems such a long time ago we freed ourselves of having a mortgage. Still remember the struggle to get one in the first place and don't envy those trying to get one now

Re: At last

When I had a mortgage in the early 60s it was £19.75 a month, fixed for 30 years.
After 6 years I paid it off after receiving an inheritance.
Some said it was not a thing to do. Could they have been right?
Thinking about it, as time went by the £19.75 would have been nothing as the £ decreased in value as what it is worth today.
But back then it was a great relief for me to be able have to find that money.

Re: At last

I was the first person in our family, a working class family, to buy his house and my brothers did their best to talk me out of it- 'a millstone round your neck' they said. Before many years had passed all four of my siblings were also buying their houses, at a discount because they were in council houses.
