The Beatles

Do The Beatles deserve their place as arguable the greatest pop group in history?

This thread is to discuss that question and others regarding this ever popular British group of musicians.

talk about their songs, albums, members, production, their place in popular culture, er...Yoko, anything related.

I'll be posting my own thoughts once the thread gets underway.

As this is a specialist thread, please stick to topic. Thanks.

Re: The Beatles

Absolutely.
British pop before them was mostly rubbish.Skiffle and Elvis wannabes:Cliff,Marty Wilde,Adam Faith,Billy Fury,Jess Conrad,Tommy Steele,etc...
(The Shadows were the rare exception.)
Then they invaded the USA and the rest is history.

Re: The Beatles

Yep. Made it possible for all the 2nd wave bands to experiment and develop their sound and not just write a 2:30 pop song.

Re: The Beatles

Yep, probably the best Pop band ever, they turned their backs on the lucrative stuff, and concentrated on the music, through many different manifestations, and quitted when the job was done, NEVER to return, respect.

Re: The Beatles

The first time I ever saw the Beatles was on "Scene at 6.30" where they sang " Twist and shout" (1963 so maybe a bit before your time Floydy)
John Lennon captured my attention and, if he had lived longer, I think he may have had a lot more music to offer.

Re: The Beatles

I remember seeing them for the first time on TV the were on at the end of a local news show presented as a new young group.

They sang Love Me Do, they had the combed forward typical Beatles hair and wore the black collarless suits that became their fashion trademark style in the early days.

I was fascinated they were so different.
