Re: Defrosting the fridge/freezer

I forgot to say that when I defrosted the old freezer compartment I'd put in two trays of boiling water; replace as needed till the ice would come off the top and sides in big slabs with urging from a knife.

Re: Defrosting the fridge/freezer

HINT. We always try to defrost our freezer when there is a very frosty night. Everything goes out of the freezer on to a newspaper base (or cold boxes) and gets put outside under several old blankets. Keeps 'em all cold if the frost breaks.

Several bowls of boiling water into the freezer and after a very short time we have an ice-free freezer ready for a wipe out and re-stocking.

I do mine in 5 minutes, I empty it, drag it outside, and blast the inside with a hose pipe, the ice just drops off.

Re: Defrosting the fridge/freezer

I "killed"a freezer trying to prise off ice with a knife. I'd stabbed the lining, something went "hiss", and I contributed to global warming without meaning to. Last time I defrosted another freezer I left the door open and turned on my dog dryer, it worked a treat

Re: Defrosting the fridge/freezer

I own up to digging at the ice too - too impatient to wait for the hair dryer but I have a wooden spatula that my daughter made me in woodwork class many moons ago and with an ash pan it scoops up bread crumbs and peas that I always find on the bottom.
