Once SSP is used up he can then go onto ESA for 13 weeks. That's claimed over the phone. He will be called in for an assessment ar 13 weeks when it will be decided if he can continue to claim with no hassles, claim but be put in the work group, or be told fit for work and switch to JSA

That of course depends on whether he decides not to go back after his surgery or not, and if the GP is willing to sign off sick

Hopefully if he does decide the sick route the employer will then dismiss on capability which means he will be eligible for benefits with no sanctions. He will also get holiday pay accued and hopefully PILON

Just don't let him resign. Let the company dismiss
