Dilemna

My 2007 Zafira cdti has become a pig to start on cold mornings, its likely that the glow plugs are shot after 11 years and 112,000 miles, trouble is the mechanic I use it reluctant to try to change them, with the car being so old,he is thinking that if one snaps it'll be a take the head off the car engine job to get it out, what to do,hmmm.

Re: Dilemna

I seem to remember that parking a diesel facing downhill in cold weather, helps it to start. I can't remember the reason why (haven't had a diesel for some years now).

Re: Dilemna

I've parked it downhill on the drive and I've also wrapped the engine up,will see if that helps later.

Re: Dilemna

That's a tough one. If the glow plugs are shot the only answer I know of is to change them.

I think it's something to do with the fuel pump freezing (it's slowly coming back to me).

I remember a few years back, my diesel would not start after a very cold night. I had to call for breakdown assistance. The mechanic said 'help me turn it around so that it's facing down hill and it might start'. So we turned it around and it started first time. I always parked it down hill after that and never had a problem.

Having said all that, whether it's your glow plugs or not, I have no idea.

Re: Dilemna

Diesel fuel can suffer from waxing in cold weather, although there’s supposed to be anti waxing agents added to the fuel, if the glow plugs are shot the only course is replacement, you either get rid or take a chance that the plugs will come out ok

Re: Dilemna

When my old diesel Peugeot wouldn't start a few years ago, it turned out to be the starter motor - there wasn't enough `kick` in it to turn over the engine. When that was replaced, it started first time, every time.

Been there, done that. Also anti-freeze in the water drum.

Sorry about the off-topic.
