Re: Jury Service

Rhian I was called for jury service a few years ago .
I had to attend the preliminary instruction day then was sent home. I then had a telephone number to ring at the same time every evening and to say a code word to see if I was required the following day. This went on for two weeks then I was 'stood down' without being needed.
You can ask to have the duty deferred under certain circumstances and provide alternative dates when you will be available.

Yes I remember I did that when I was at Uni
But I've never been recalled!

Re: Jury Service

The first time I did it, Judge John Deed was on TV and we all kept saying 'Judge Deed wouldn't stand for that'.

Re: Jury Service

yes I did jury service at kingston crown court in surrey. Sat on 3 trials and have to say I think everyone should do it just once.

Why? just to see how slow our justice system is and how weak the sentences actually are. it is a joke.

the swearing in and challenge (not that i was ) is interesting, Apparently the accused can challenge up the 3 times ? someone they object to on the jury panel. It could be because they think they stand more chance with a female/male/age group /race/colour or whatever to be acquitted.

Work mate of mine at BT was on the Marchioness Thames boat disaster. he was on the jury for 3 months and in the end it was stopped on the grounds it was a corporate case and went to a higher court.

Re: Jury Service

I did it years ago. Had to travel about 30 miles to and from the Courthouse for a couple of weeks.

Re: Jury Service

Yes - I have done jury service - and found it very interesting - especially as I was elected foreman of the jury. It is a bit scary when you have to stand up and say guilty !
