Wild Deer Problem

There is currently a big push to have deer declared a pest in NSW.

Deer populations have soared by 60 per cent between 2009 and 2016 according to the Invasive Species Council [ISC], the environmental group set up to protect Australia from harmful and invasive species.

Currently deer are classified as "game" but to declare them a pest would put them on the same level as other feral animals like pigs, dogs, cats, rabbits, foxes etc. It is much easier to cull pests than it is game.

The problem is that the state government relies on the Hunters, Shooters and Fishers Party (HSF) to retain power in NSW. The HSF Party prefers deer classified as game because then numbers can be maintained for hunting whereas as a pest you don't need a permit to kill them.

Because of the drought deer are impacting on farm land and encroaching on urban populations this car was written off locally after hitting a deer. They are common locally and I must admit I have chased after young deer on the back roads with my car because I love venison but I have a bullbar (I don't have a rifle).

Sydney Trains said there had been more than 30 collisions involving deer wandering onto the rail corridor over the past 12 months, 24 of them in the Illawarra.

More than $1 million was spent on fencing in a futile bid to stop them crossing tracks along the south-coast rail line.
