Yes, and a very good animated version is available too.

The intro lasts a few minutes and then the main film starts.

Many years ago it was serialised on radio four (probably).
I was working in an illustration studio and we were all enchanted by the story AND the way it was read.

Everyone was tearful at the end of course.

The other one that springs to mind from that era is Mrs Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.

Forgotten the ending but think it was happy .... phew

Can't remember if I watched the film because I tend to steer clear of weepies.

I love the film too. A new adaption of the book was serialised on radio 4 last autumn , it was much more detailed and violent than the film but gripping.

Oh dear, Watership Down - I took my daughter and her friends for a birthday treat to watch it at the cinema and they all ended up crying and screaming. I have never forgotten the trauma I caused those poor girls. Still, I enjoyed the beautiful music.

Unsure if depressing is the word but definitely upsetting.

After that I read Plague Dogs and found that equally unsettling, but in a slightly different way.

Have not read anything else by him ... avoided his books and found him, when interviewed on the radio, 'worrying' in some way

Re: Watership Down

I love that film & cry buckets each time I see it. The song Bright Eyes has me blubbing too.
