Regent Honeyeater
This beautiful bird is currently Critically Endangered in the wild.
Once found between Adelaide and the Central coast of Queensland in the last 30 years its range has dramatically decreased. Loss of their woodland habitat is the major threat ~ 85% of the box iron bark forests that once extensively covered inland eastern Australia have been cleared due to expanding agriculture.
Efforts are being made between Government and non-government organisations ~ community groups and landholders to ensure this species continues to exist in the wild - rejuvenating the habitat being the key which in turn will also help other threatened plants and animals.
A national captive breeding effort is also currently underway to ensure its survival.
