painting brickwork

I got this idea in my head I'd paint the inside brick wall of my conservatory cream . I decided to watch a video on you tube how to paint brickwork , this clever chappie tells me what to get and says its easy just watch me . 2 minutes later it's complete and looking great . I buy all the masonry paint and masonry brushes and made a start yesterday morning .

I couldn't understand how come that nice chappy on you tube did it so quickly and so evenly I thought it would be done in 2 minutes , he forgot to tell me the wall sucks up the paint and doesn't fill all the holey bits , takes ages to paint and dibble into the eneven bits and I'd need a second coat that I've just finished . It doesn't look as good as his after all he's a professional and so fast !

It's looking ok creamy and brighter than red brick a bit holey so I'm gonna cover up the uneven bits with some pictures .

Now for a well earned cuppa

Re: painting brickwork

Never an easy job as some bricks can absorb their own weight in moisture! However, the second coat is always much easier because the first coat seals the pores, and although filling all the tiny holes can still be tedious the best way that I have found is to use thick paint thickly on the second coat which usually does the trick.

Re: painting brickwork

My porch had bricks painted a faded pink when we moved here . I have since painted them off white, twice, and have to say the second coat is much easier and does improve the look a bit.

Definately never again . I guess professionals use paint sprayers , how on earth do they paint a whole house it must take forever .

A watered-down coat (mist coat) first of all might have made life easier but well done for persevering.

Re: painting brickwork

Unibond, slightly diluted is excellent for sealing brick, hardboard, plaster. Clear, you can even put a coat over some old paint, as both will adhere.
