Dementia/Alzheimer's

Please, no flippant remarks. A serious thread.

I lost an uncle last week to this debilitating and horrendous disease.
My father died of dementia a few years ago and my mother is very sick of Alzheimer’s as well, in a specialist care home. My wife lost her mother to it as well.
It’s a Hell of a problem for families of loved ones, carers and others. There are many forms of dementia but the cruel irony is that the actual patient afflicted with the disease is usually oblivious to having it. They end up in their own little bubble of a world only they can understand.

It’s tough. It causes family arguments with siblings, and one wonders whether the offspring too (i.e. myself in this case) will succumb to the disease. I’m fine at the moment, but every single instance of memory lapse I analyse these days, even basic absent-mindedness. With both parents affected, it is highly likely I may indeed suffer some kind of dementia problem in the long term.

All I’m saying here is making people aware of this often misunderstood ailment, which is finally finding early stages of some kind of deterrent – and if you notice any signs, however slight, of dementia in your own family/friends behavoir, or in yourself, make sure you get onto their GP straight away.

Any questions and I’m here to help guys.
Below is a very good forum worth looking into if ever the need arises.

So sorry to hear that Floydy. The problem is of course that people of " a certain age" will often show signs of forgetfulness which doesn't necessarily mean the onset of Alzheimers. Its certainly something that concerns me of course.

I suspect this is a thing most of us dread. We know we are mortal and hope pain can be helped but to slowly lose the grey cells and often to realise it`s happening is so cruel.

Re: Dementia/Alzheimer's

My husband was diagnosed with Alzheimers a year ago.
I don't like to think of the future too much.

I'm a member of that forum Floydy and will probably use it a lot in future when I feel I need it. At the moment I prefer not to read about the problems I may have to face. We try to carry on as normal until the time comes that we can't.

I know the devastating effects of Alzheimer's - my mum had it.

Hi Floydy, I know the feeling, my Mum has severe Dementhia and is now in a Care Home, but before that she was living in a flat on her own, and my Sister and I was caring for her with Carers as well, my Mum doesn't know who we are or anyone else and she has now turned a bit violent, she shouts and swears at the Carers and even us, and yes Family arguments as well, and my Nan was also like it, so I to do wonder whether I will get it.

Re: Dementia/Alzheimer's

Thanks all
So sorry to hear that you have/had close relatives of your own with the disease.
That forum is very good by the way, but like you, Carol, I only look in when I need some info...it's too easy to get bogged down and sink into depression reading those awful stories.

Depending on the strain of the disease there is no telling how long the sufferer is able to know that he/she has it.
It's even worse when their family is unaware he/she has dementia as well. My father was a completely different case to my mum, we just thought it was 'basic old age' which was causing varying degrees of stubbornness in him. It was only in his final weeks that we were told about dementia fully and it hit us like a bolt from the blue when we were told he had days to live.

My mum's is full blown Alzheimer's. She can be shouty and stroppy, happy, singing, chatting away - but absolutely nothing makes any sense to people around her. Sometimes she recognises me (I think), other times not. It wouldn't make any different to her if I had seen her a minute ago or three weeks, it's all the same. Nothing registers. She has regular falls and is incontinent. It's nasty, I don't wish it on anyone and I'm going to have to stop talking for now.

My Mother and her two sisters died from this terrible disease Floydy, and I wonder will I get it, probably so because I am so much more like my Mother than any of the rest of the family, but all we can do is hope we don’t. I keep hearing reports of breakthroughs in finding a cure for this but the trails take a very long time, hopefully they will conquer it eventually.

My thoughts exactly, Jem.
I keep telling myself not to worry too much about getting the disease, and that in itself should make me more determined not to.

There are new breakthroughs almost every day with dementia at the moment, so there's definitely some light shining at the end of that long tunnel

Yes that's very true.
But if several of your family members have developed dementia over the generations, it may be appropriate to seek genetic counselling for information and advice about your chances of developing Alzheimer's disease when you are older.

As yet, I've had the basic NHS test of looking at an iPad and remembering what picture appeared before the one on the screen now. Totally bloody useless.
I'll wait until I see any signs developing, and meanwhile try to keep an active, healthy lifestyle seeing plenty of friends and family. Hell, I'm only 51 so not worried yet.
