Petrol or diesel car choice???

Here in the Uk according to the news Diesel cars are being sold in less numbers than petrol.
Can't be because of exhaust emissions for example mine cuts out when stopped to help prevent and the one Sue is geting the emissions are so low it doesn't even qualify for road fund tax, both diesel.

How can anyone justify petrol over diesel? take a Range Rover petrol doing 18 MPG against a diesel doing 60/70MPG.
The arguement just does not stack up.

That is our choice to go diesel, but I would be interested in members thoughts about it and how they came to that conclusion .
Petrol or Diesel?

Re: Petrol or diesel car choice???

I have a diesel at the moment, but that's only because it showed up at the right price. I'd really prefer a petrol now, and many of them do almost as good mpg as diesels.
If you couple that with the likely higher maintenance and repair costs of a diesel, plus the emissions factor, I'd say the diesel car has had its day.

Ask an AA or RAC patrolman what is the biggest cause of breakdowns.
I was told it was ignition problems.
Once a diesel is running that is pretty much it.

We had a problem with the DPF filter on our Saab diesel because we didn't do enough long runs. For the type of driving we do a petrol would be better but the car we wanted was only available in diesel so we took the risk again. So far so good!

As a courier I used to run a Berlingo van. Once a year it would require fuel and air filter replacement, every ten thousand miles after returning from a job I would leave the oil draining until morning where I would replace the oil and filter. That was the only maintenance necessary and was easily completed by me. The cost was around fifty quid a year. It never let me down in the four years I ran it, there were over 300,000 miles on the clock when I replaced it with another brand new Berlingo.

With no spark plugs or electrical system [except engine management] a diesel engine is practically indestructible and will run on just about any fuel that burns.
Providing an adequate air supply a diesel engine will also run totally submerged in water.

In 2010 I purchased a new Qashqai 2 litre diesel, it costs me around £200 a year for a service and MOT, will achieve almost 50 mpg on long runs, and has never let me down. After five years I contemplated replacing it with a new one, but I asked myself why when it still runs like the day I drove it out of the garage as a new vehicle.

There is a good reason why all commercial, Marine, and railway engines are all diesel. They are the [and remain] the most successful engine ever produced.
For me it's no contest.........Diesel every time.

Sorry Val, the only exception to a reliable diesel are the specialised ones like the type SAAB put in. In an effort to make them faster less polluting and even more economical they compromise reliability. Beware of diesels with High Pressure fuel pumps [HD's or HDI's] very fast but very expensive when they go wrong, and they do often.

Re: Petrol or diesel car choice???

I believe the down turn in diesel car purchases are due to some cities taxing high polluters (sic)
http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-new...-air-pollution
I have had diesel cars but the threat of extra taxation means that my next car will be petrol.
