My 7+yo Rangie is fairly fuel-efficient for a large-ish vehicle.
Albeit, it never goes off bitumen and rarely ventures into city traffic - mainly country roads.
Only reason I keep it is the occasional need to go through a fair depth of water.

It applies to just about every European car here, they just don't sell enough to provide proper after sales service. You see the odd Skoda, Rover, BMW, Jaguar, Renault, Citroen etc but they are all over priced and sell so few that parts are expensive and often involve a long wait.

Mercedes made the mistake of trying to expand their market out of the luxury end and have just gone downhill since with a series of poor quality products, definitely worth avoiding.

Best to stick to Jap, Thai or Korean cars they sell a lot and are reliable.

Re: Petrol or diesel car choice???

I much prefer diesels, but my latest car is a petrol Kia Sportage. Successive governments encouraged people to go to diesel as it was "cleaner" - now they've done an about turn and told us they got it completely wrong and we should all have petrol fuelled cars. Knowing our opportunist governments, they will follow that up with punitive taxation on diesel vehicles, hence my choice of petrol for our new car.

Yeah, and having convinced everyone to buy petrol they will turn it around again in a few years and make diesels the engine to be seen with....It's good for the economy it stops people hoarding money. Same reason the interest rates are so low these days.
And same reason you can take a large chunk of your private pension.

I look forward to it!

My 14 year-old Skoda diesel is almost on its last legs. It also looks a bit of a shed, and I can't imagine I'd get much for it even if I could persuade anyone to buy it.

I don't know what sort of figures they are thinking of offering for scrappage. In their eagerness to rid the country of these nasty diesels, it might be relatively generous and hopefully a good deal more than the normal scrap value of my car.

If so, I'd grab their hands off...

and buy another diesel!
