Fibre

Hi all, I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for me.

I have Diverticulois (Pocket Disease) caused by lack of fibre in the Bowels.

I eat plenty of vegetables and fruit every day, I have 3 portions of vegetables 5 days out of 7 and fruit every day, beans once a week.

I have to watch what I eat because I am a bad Diabetic, so there are quite a few things that I am unable to eat.

I also eat Al Bran and prunes.

Does anyone else have a Fibre problem?

Open to all suggestions please.

Susie xx

Re: Fibre

You can get a fibre drink from the pharmacists, I know one of the ladies at work has that with each meal, she's not good at getting fibre into herself any other way.

Re: Fibre

Susie it sounds like you diet is full of fibre, do you eat wholemeal bread?
If you are having problems why not ask your doctor ,or diabetes specialist, if they could refer you to a dietician?
My sister had the trots, on and off for 18 years, but when I insisted they refer her to a dietician, she was cured in 3 months..... something her GP hadn't been able to do over the 18 years, despite many visits to see him.

Susie, I think the fibre drink Julie means is 'Fybogel,'
which is the one GP's usually recommend and can be bought in pharmacies.
I used to take it a long time ago, but stopped because it is not just fibre, it contains other rubbish like colours, flavours and aspartame as well.

The purest product I found is this, and it is just pure Psyllium Husk with nothing added. They do it with or without FOS prebiotic.

Re: Fibre

Sorry to hear that Susie, My mother in law had Diverticulois. The funny thing was though, Albran and Wheatabix etc made her symptoms worse.

Re: Fibre

Oh don't say that Cedronella, I have just eaten a bowl of Albran.

Mups I looked up the psyllium Husk and they cause a lot of side effects, the feeling of choking, that's one thing I don't want, plus it is quite expensive, I think I will have to just stick to loads of Vegs. Fruit, Nuts, Prune and Beans. I might make an appointment though with my GP.

I would speak to your GP Susie, and ask about a dietician. They are well trained on how to deal with dietary problems and may be able to suggest things you haven't tried.

Susie, I can honestly say I have never heard of any side effects like choking.
Fybogel from the chemist is psyllium husk too, but as I said before, it's got chemicals I don't want in it as well.
I've certainly never had a problem with the pure husk, but I guess that doesn't mean someone else won't have.
I just sprinkle a small spoonful in my porridge and that's that. No problems whatsoever. I can't remember now, but I believe you take it for 2 - 3 weeks, then rest your tummy for 5 days, then re-start it, don't take it continuously without a break. I believe that is only so that your tummy doesn't get too dependent on it.

I find the best remedy is make sure I drink enough water - simple.
