Re: Is there a car you wish you had kept?

I had a Mk 3 Escort 1.6 GL, and spent a lot of time on it - a thorough scrub & clean; Waxoyling; not so much a lot of money, though I fitted a new starter motor, battery, new brake parts & service items, but time & effort

I had planned on keeping it for a long time, but only a few weeks after I'd done all that work I completely misjudged a left hand bend, and wrote it off on a drystone wall

I wasn't hurt, but it was damned annoying!

Same here - I had an amazing collection of bikes and never paid more than a tenner for any of them. If I'd kept them they would be worth a fortune now. I had my favourite - my BSA Gold Star, a Vincent Black Shadow, which at 17 I wasn't strong enough to ride safely - I was alright while it was going, but if I stopped at traffic lights there was always a danger of me dropping it. I had an Ariel Square Four (horrible machine!), a Velocette Venom 500cc, an AJS 500 single cylinder monster which would launch you 15' over the handlebars if it kicked back on you. I had a collection of old ex post office BSA Bantams and a few others which are collectable nowadays. They were all in my dad's shed when I left home and after a year or two he asked me whether I wanted to keep them and, like a fool, I said, "No - give 'em away!"

We used to have a beautiful Vauxhall Omega. It was the full shilling.

A comfortable, smooth ride. So quiet, It accelerated beautifully and felt like you were taking of in a plane.

It was a beige metallic and had a gorgeous beige leather interior.

I think about that car a lot ...

The Mercedes E-Class that came after it didn't hold a light to it.

Can't remember if it started off as manual, then changed to an auto, but my Mum picked up on it and queried it with the new owner!

Capri was great to look at (and I did the lettering in the windscreen The Professionals..what a geek, eh?) and the Escort was a great mover, but by heck, water came in everywhere so it was wet and rusty.
The wiper linkage fell apart on my Dolomite when I was driving in heavy snow and would only move in one direction. I attached knicker elastic to pull the wipers back which got me home.

(I'm not saying how I got the knicker elastic)

A Ford Anglia was my first car, also. It was held together with tape and string.

I only had it for three months and then scrapped it.

Re: Is there a car you wish you had kept?

My first car, a mini, both the wife( then girlfriend) and i had just passed our test within a few months of each other we went to Cornwall camping, it took us 14 hours, as we were following her parents, and they got lost, oh what fun, another car I had was an alfasud, boy was that thing quick, do a hundred easy and the torque steer wow, it had a lovely exhaust burble as well , until I smashed it up on black ice into another car, I had it repaired though, shortly after that the head gasket went, but was fortunate to have a bil who was (still is ) mechanically minded and we were able to fix it, it was the dreaded rust, however, that did for it in the end, you could almost see the dreaded tin worm munching away at it! , sold it on in the end before it got too bad
