you're only as happy as.......

Someone said to me the other day, whilst speaking of our children and me saying "if they're happy, we're happy". She said "you're only as happy as your unhappiest child". What a true statement. I can agree with that completely.

Well I don't agree with that at all. I can empathise with the mood of my children and wife but if they are low it doesn't mean that I have to be low too.

I agree Alan, I try and be happy all the time.
If one of the family is low I try and lift them not join them.

I'm always happy on the outside, doesn't stop me worrying about how my kids are. I don't let it affect anyone else but me

I am my own person and not dependent on others for my state of contentment. Of course I want my children to be content with their lives, which they appear to be, but their state of mind is their business.

It's a difficult one and some truth to it I guess because if you live with someone who is depressed it does affect everyone's moods, but I think really most people are only as happy as their health allows. Anyone in pain will find it hard to be happy no matter how happy everyone else appears to be.

Our happiness does depend on those around us and on our own mood or health.

I always think we have to have some unhappiness to appreciate the happy times, and it isn't normal to me to be happy all the time.
