The Philae lander launched from the Rosetta space probe that landed on a comet as it passed by Mars has caused the comet to veer from its normal trajectory making it collide with Earth on the North Atlantic seaboard somewhere near New Jersey at 6:20PM EST on 21st December 2017 thus wiping out every living thing on the planet. Naturally, the powers that be don't want anyone to know about this to prevent a panic but even now they're preparing huge well-stocked underground bunkers for politicians and those who can afford it to survive for at least five years by the use of generated electricity, isoponic gardens for fresh veg, an abundance of chickens and a large variety of tinned goods.
