Re: Buddlias

I have the blue buddleia and on a good day it's smothered in Red Admiral butterflies but not so many white ones.

I cut mine back every two years and it always thrives.

Thanks Judd after we see how big they get with one years growth we'll see how often we need to cut them.

Re: Buddlias

I bought dwarf ones, they should only get to about 4ft.

. . . . And I can reach 'em to prune them then.

Re: Buddlias

That sounds fabulous Julie. Do you have any photos?

We have a rich dark purple variety that has beautiful flowers every year. I was thinking of getting some white ones but didn't realise they also came in yellow and red.

The neighbour was horrified the other day as I cut them back as the flowering season is over. I told her that I do this every year and they always grow back more abundant than before. It's quite funny but she'd never noticed. I can't imagine how big they can get if you leave them, but I cut everything back in Autumn and it always flowers beautifully.

I was thinking of getting the same to have on the patio and attract more butterflies and bees. Love the blues varieties. Such a rich colour.

Re: Buddlias

Where I live, I always cut my Buddleias back in April. As I have a very windy garden the old dead heads of the plant help filter the wind through the garden and help protect my fences.

I cut back to a low bud and always get at least six foot growth each year. The birds love to eat the bugs and seeds throughout the winter.

I have the dwarf ones too Mups they are lovely. The other colours are the yellow, which is more ball shaped, dark purple and red. I might try a white one too next year.
