Re: The right decision?

A friend of my Husbands has had both of his knees done over the last 18months and is now able to walk without the two sticks that he used, he will be 90 next March.

Re: The right decision?

I think I'd go for it if your specialist suggested it.

It's true you may need temporary help but it would only be for a few weeks. You wouldn't be completely helpless - they don't let you out of hospital until you can climb some stairs.

This sort of operation you would get over a lot quicker that the abdomen one you mention. In 6 short weeks you would be driving/walking again as normal.

It may not do a lot for your mobility because you also have a back problem but it wouldn't be giving you pain anymore.

I've just read Frankie's post. Wow - just shows it's never too late.

Re: The right decision?

Only you will know the answer CeeCee

My mum had a hip replacement at 79 (nearly 80) and it made for a big improvement in her quality of life

I was with her when the (gooorgeous, sorry!) Spanish Surgeon said to her (I'll never forget it)
"If you think the pain is too much...
Then you should have the replacement no?"

I admired his clarity!

Btw..
The recovery period was quick
And although myself and my brother helped I know it is something she would have coped with, had we been around or not.
We were more psychological and emotional support..

Re: The right decision?

Forgot to mention , my sister had a very big operation ,her knee was so bad , then she got an infection. She lived completely alone in an upstairs flat, I did not live near enough to help her, a neighbour got her shopping but she managed ,with aid of crutches or a walker ,to wash, dress and feed herself, and to get down and up the stairs twice a week for physiotherapy.Im sure you would cope fine physically, but I do understand your fears

I have had a multitude of operations throughout my life.

I live alone, my family all work, so Carer's would maybe required.

I am 79 (next week) so my future is limited.

Given that I have collapsed vertebrae in my spine, the knee replacement wont improve my mobility much.

I feel that I am costing the NHS a fortune and therefore the money should go to those who would benefit more.

Those are my thoughts, what are yours? The consultant said he would see me again in six months to see if I had changed my mind.
My sister suffers with both types and has had many ops but is still in alot of pain.If your pain is manageable then only you can make the choice thats right for you.
