This is the sort of thing that you expect from the archetypal bureaucrat who lives behind a desk and has absolutely no experience of life in the real world!

He, and just about anyone else (except Compo of course), would do better than the present incumbent. This is becoming increasingly apparent every day.

My pleasure

"In all classes, subject to the special provisions for each class and the tolerances allowed, the bananas must be:

— green and unripened,
— intact,
— firm,
— sound; produce affected by rotting or deterioration such as to make it unfit for consumption is excluded,
— clean, practically free from visible foreign matter,
— practically free from pests,
— practically free from damage caused by pests,
— with the stalk intact, without bending, fungal damage or dessication,
— with pistils removed,
free from malformation or abnormal curvature of the fingers
— practically free from bruises,
— practically free from damage due to low temperatures,
— free from abnormal external moisture,
— free from any foreign smell and/or taste.

and so on

If you were thinking of selling bananas, one read of this ridiculously epically long document would be enough to put you off.

Re: Boris Johnson resigns.

But Mr Realist where EXACTLY does it say bent bananas are illegal ?
Or even that we should aim for straight bananas as the ideal ?

The wording in YOUR post says "Stalk intact, without bending."
The consumer rarely if ever see banana stalks.

Fruit "free from malformation or abnormal curvature of the fingers"

What is the problem with THAT ?

NEXT the balloon ban if you please.

Re: Boris Johnson resigns.

'Marketing standards' it says.

Legal or not, it suggests that all bananas sold within the EU should comply with their standards.

I'd be interested to know what would happen to anyone contravening these standards.

Bruv dear boy, that link is the EU LAW on the sale of bananas. It is in fact 1 of 4 directives covering bananas which in itself is . . . well bananas !

The regulations clearly state, as you have accepted, that bananas MUST BE "free from malformation or abnormal curvature of the fingers"

That's the rule matey like it or not.

This means you CAN NOT trade/sell bananas that have abnormal curvature (unless they are for industrial use rather than human consumption).

One might start to question "what do they mean by abnormal curvature"? But frankly if we can't sell a basic fruit without 4 separate EU directives covering many thousands of words involving hundreds of individual regulations then we are frankly in cloud cuckoo land.

The fact that the regulation has that ambiguity over the definition of "abnormal" highlights just how ludicrous it is.

Why on Earth would anyone want to have their country run by a bunch of absolute crackpots who think this level of micro management is necessary?!

Wonder what the comparable British standards were ?

Still waiting on the Balloon ban................line em up and I will knock em down...............because basically they are ridiculous claims, taken out of context.
