Re: Leisurely Scribbles (part 5)

Remember “Throw Momma from the Train” with Sylvester Stallone, having seen his mother on TV I wouldn’t blame him, undoubtably one of the worst films I ever watched.

I never knew we ever had leprosy on these Isles.
I remember my grandfather saying that Leopardstown used to be a leper colony, I found that hard to believe at the time thinking that leprosy was a disease of countries with very hot climates, it is now a very swanky part of Dublin and you’ll pay a fortune for a house there, I’ve been to Leopardstown racecourse many times, especially for the jumping races, I often wondered when that racing trainer Ted Walsh meant when he was talking about his horses “Ah that new gelding we bought is a grand little leper” until I found out by leper he meant jumper, a leaper like a Stag, seems he has a whole stable full of lepers.
Leopardstown comes from Baile na Lobhar which means "Town of the Lepers" and arose because in the middle ages people with leprosy were kept outside the city to avoid infection Leprosy was common in Dublin in medieval times and in the 14th Century a leper hospital was built near St Stephen's Green. It was later moved out to the Dublin mountains - the area where it was sited became known as Leopardstown. Wiki.

Re: Leisurely Scribbles (part 5)

yep funny stories - I once lived in an area called DEMCO - very very swanky area [we were renting -honest] right on the beach and million dollar properties double levels for best views [ we were one street back so didn't get a view!] but the name came from Derby Meat Company - that's all the company years ago a thriving one had moved from its original spot some 200kms away to its present site [as they do] and where we were.

when it was DEMCO the place stunk to high hell with meat and there were plenty of scavenging rats. They used to have pipes and run the blood directly into the ocean. the pipe and blood outlet attracted plenty of crocodiles. the please was a stinky meat and blood one and now is the playground of millionaires but the street I lived on is still called Demco Drive - I can still smell the $100 notes!! true story honest!!

Yes Sweetie, the Gummy fella is in great form lately, lets hope it holds out. He really does have some great tales to tell, he’s a well travelled man you know, trouble is you have to drag them out of him.

Darling and dear (that’s me and her) were out the back earlier painting the little picket fence, how romantic it was too, there we were sitting on a stool each slabbing it on to our hearts content, what fun we had.
As I said a while back you can’t get any ‘Jobbers’ to do these thing anymore with the economy on the way up, house prices have rocketed this year and are being snapped up, yes the future looks very bright for our young folks over here now, I just hope it doesn’t go belly up like the last “Celtic Tiger” I think somebody slipped the Tiger a Mickey Finn. Actually we had a barman in our local in the 80’s called Michael Finn, no kidding’, you can only imagine the slagging he used to get.
