Hi

Yes, still loads of golf balls, but not for the same reason, they are listening stations, not radar.

You were marched out of Menwith Hill?

Were you a Greenham Common woman?

SF is right.

There are quite a lot of 'golf balls' there, but generally smaller than the three that used to be at Fylingdales.

I can't say for certain, but I believe that 'golf balls' are there to cover parabolic antennae, either to protect them from the weather or quite possibly to protect their design from prying eyes.

Again, I'm not sure of their exact use, but I understand that parabolic antennae, because they are highly directional, are used to receive signals from satellites and possibly to send signals the other way.

I don't think they could efficiently receive signals from ground stations, even if bounced off ionised atmospheric layers; ordinary antennae (of similar design to radio and TV antennae) would be used for that, and I'm sure there are some like that at Menwith Hill too.

Nothing so exciting JBR, was out with friends - heading for a Mill shop in the general area. The navigator (failed) who had obviously never read a map in his life - took us up what he said was a short cut! Turned out to be a back road into Menwith - they were not amused. We were 'invited' into an office to explain ourselves, escorted by an armed guard back to our car, escorted by a jeep back to the main road and watched until we were well away!

I've always fancied that the inside of the balls were like those on The Prisoner TV series with some bloke sat at the end of a rotating arm watching out for things.

Yes - we were! I was told that they are not always so ferocious but there had been a lot of 'greenham' type activity and someone had actually broken in - so they were just being extra careful.

Incidentally - we gave up on the mill search and and went to play in Skipton Castle instead !
