I'm halfway to being a fully fledged OAP!

Received my Freedom Pass today, which replaces the London 60+ Oyster. So now I can travel wherever I want!

Excited? You bet.

Just under 6 weeks to completion. Which would be even more exciting.

I never thought I'd get excited over becoming old. (Now, I wonder if I'll get the Hearing Allowance this winter??)

I thought Oysters lived in the sea. I must be well out of touch with modern slang. London 60+ what is that when it is at home. Freedom pass? Hearing allowance? does that mean one of those trumpet things? I just give up

I can't or don't even know if I am allowed a bus pass being 70 yrs old next month or even how one goes about getting one

No nor has my wife, Don't think we are entitled to one in East Sussex. Never had any notification when we lived in the West midlands either that we were allowed one

Re: I'm halfway to being a fully fledged OAP!

Well done Jazzi. One of my favourite things of being older is the free pass.
I think you mean Heating Allowance
Yes you will get the heating allowance as its assessed in September so
your circumstances then meaning your pension etc is taken into
consideration and you should get your £200 in November. That is if
someone doesn't change it in the May elections
Good luck and all I can say is ENJOY.

p.s. bus passes are given out to people on their age.
People born after 1950 have not got an automatic
bus pass just because they become 60. My neighbour
is 62 and will be 63 in December but doesn't get her
free bus pass until September. Her friend was 62 in
January and she gets hers in October. Sneaking new
rule that came in with the conservatives 5 years ago.

pps Realspeed. You have to apply for it they don't know
you want one so you have to go to the local town bus
company with birth certificate, council tax paper, passport, proof of address like a bill. I had to get mine thinking I
was some kind of alien to prove I was entitled to it. Saying
that I have enjoyed my free bus pass for 8 years now well happy.

I didn't get any notification, but I was queueing at the PO on my 60th birthday.

Re: I'm halfway to being a fully fledged OAP!

Hi Eliza ... I'll jump in and answer your question

The bus pass can be used after 9.30 Mon-Fri up to any time at night ... before 9.30 it is half fare with the pass. It can be used at any time on Sat/Sun.

The English bus pass is valid throughout England but we have to pay in Scotland and Wales ... and they have to pay in England.

In some areas of Staffordshire (or it might be all of Staffs) it is free before 9.30 a.m. too.

Some bus passes allow free train travel depending on the council funding (Macclesfield won't pay for trains ! ) but Stockport Council and Manchester which are almost next door to us do give free travel on trains and trams

Enjoy
