Are you shy!

I remember I was very shy when I was at school. On one occasion I was left in the house with a nurse who was a friend of my mum, she was a very pretty lady and wore a beautiful dress, she just sat there in our front room and drank the coffee my mum had made her before she went to the shops for something. I sat in the chair opposite her and said absolutely nothing. What a wally I was in those days.
I cannot believe I am the same guy.
When I was taken on as a college lecturer things really had to change, I remember staying up at night practicing the delivery of my written prepared lecturers.
In no time things seem to change, I didn't need the notes any more and I started to feel confident to speak for an hour without any material.
Do you feel confident with others? Is it something you learn as a skill or is it something which comes with age.
One thing I have learnt is that 80% of the things you worry about never actually happen.

I was painfully shy as a child, but nowadays I've come into my own and am chatty and outgoing, although not an extrovert.

A wee bit of shyness can be attractive imo.

Shyness can lead to missed opportunities, but can also get you mothered.

Re: Are you shy!

Yes, painfully shy. Or I can be. I hate family gatherings, for example, and when Mum was alive I'd be like her shadow. I found it hard to mingle and chat with others.

Now though, I've found doing the computer class has helped me with my confidence, and doing the allotment committee work.

Going on holiday alone does wonders for shyness!

Mum used to say she was painfully shy when young, but she got a job in Beautility Furniture and the office and yard was just all men! (the drivers included) so she had to get out of that shyness, and then in later life she was the exact opposite. Being in a certain environment can help to change you for the better, if you approach it in the right frame of mind.

No Bob, not shy
I think your upbringing has a lot to do with it and who you take after too.
I was left to fend for meself as a child, so had to be as I am. Also, both parents were outgoing

My Dad was about average but my mum was a "monsters she was extremely overbearing, by the time I was 12 years old I had seen her really walk over my head master, our GP, the local pharmacist and two shop keepers. She could over power any argument and I am sure this had something to do with my shyness, I just did not want to tangle with another monster like her, I really wanted a quiet life with as little people contact as possible. Obviously I got over it slowly but I wanted to make sure my children did not suffer the same treatment.
How a child develops socially is definitely affected by the attitude of there parents or guardians.
Very interesting subject, job to know what to do for the best.
