6th February is International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation.
Over 140 million girls and women alive today have undergone some form of FGM
If current trends continue, about 86 million additional girls, worldwide, will be subjected to the practice by 2030.
FGM is mostly carried out on young girls sometime between infancy and age 15.
FGM causes severe bleedings and health issues, including cysts, infections, infertility, as well as complications in childbirth, increased risk of newborn deaths.
FGM is a violation of the human rights of girls and women.
Absolutely disgusting and un-necessary. A practice that doesn't even have a place in the dark ages. Anyone practicing this type of mutilation these days, need long jail time. An abomination.
Some of it of course practised in this poor benighted country - how refreshing to experience the new and exciting customs of a section of our illustrious new guests...
Is it done to boys??. Do not confuse circumcision with genital mutilation.
I think it is both when done for purely religious reasons when the boy in question is too young to refuse or is aware why its happening. It is a barbaric sexual assault regardless of sex.
