An MOT at Doc's

I had to go to the Doc's recently to have My ears syringed as they were clogged up with wax...Hadn,t been there for Years except to have the flu' jab,so She decided in Her wisdom to take My blood pressure, which was normal, then said "let's send You for an MOT"...EH!!...I just came in to get My ears sorted!!!..anyway went like a good girl to nursey and had bloods taken, urine tested,height/weight,measured,talked about diet, exercise etc'...now it's all on the Health Centres computer....Awaiting now for results of said tests..I'm convinced They'll find something wrong...I'm not sure if I'm pleased at My doc' for being so thorough,or peeved that 'My ignorance is bliss' attitude has been scuppered!!...What do You think? :~)

Re: An MOT at Doc's

Just had mine done May. Now waiting to have a blood test for Cholestral, diabetis and anything else.

Apparently The Daily Telegraph said.......
NHS MOT health checks are 'useless', experts claim

NHS "MOT" health checks offered to millions of over 40s are a waste of money and could do more harm than good, experts have warned. ................

I must admit it can make you feel concerned about the results.

Re: An MOT at Doc's

I think I agree Maursey also about the concern...I have enough stress at the moment with worry about a close Relatives health without having to be concerned about My Own...Told the Nurse if My cholesterol was higher than the magic number 5,then there was no way I would be taking statins or any other drugs..I'm wondering now do Our Doc's get paid extra for sending Patients for MOTs?...Seems a waste of time and money for a 72 yr old like Me who's only prob' is arthritic knees.

Re: An MOT at Doc's

I think I would be happy just to get my ears sorted mine don't syringe any more so I have been deaf since November waiting to be sent to the specialist in April.
MOTs on cars a good idea, not so sure on people, blood pressure I can see the need to check it occasionally but they can't see people who are really ill here so I would be a did annoyed if I thought they were taking time for people who didn't even want the checks.

"Ignorance is bliss" it also gives time for illness and disease to get well established before they make their presence felt. No, it's much better to know and get the treatment in motion.

Re: An MOT at Doc's

After my first Heart Attack in 2004 I have turned up religiously every year for my well man clinic, and although it's good to keep an eye on things like blood pressure, cholesterol and possible diabetes, they failed to spot the onset of my second Heart Attack last April.
I will of course carry on attending the checkups, but I am responsible for my own health, and it's better to make an informed choice which way your treatment [if any] should go.
I decided; after a lot of research, not to take statins. The only time I regret my decision is when I attend a clinic with a different doctor and I have to repeat everything I have learned about not taking statins. Very frustrating.

Re: An MOT at Doc's

Just phoned Receptionist for results..everything clear except cholesterol which is high at 8.3 EEK!...Nurse will call Me at Home Tomorrow at 3pm to discuss it...I'm wondering if losing weight will lower it,though the Nurse seemed quite happy with My BMI of 25 when She weighed Me...There's no history of heart disease/stroke in My Family, and I've never smoked, rarely drink alcohol, and am not obese..I also walk everywhere and exercise every day....Jeeze!...Hope I don't pop My clogs sooner than I thought...any tips will be gratefully received :~)

Check what sort of cholesterol there is good and bad and they don't always seem to differentiate when they give the result.

I was called for the MOT thing, too and now have to assessed as to whether I'm coeliac. I hope not, I can't see me fiddling around with the gluten free diet so am keeping everything crossed.
My cholesterol is just over 6 and they didn't seem too worried about that - you may have to cut a few fatty things out - or eat more porridge!! lol. Your BMI is within their target range, I believe, May so not all bad, eh?

Good thinking Cranberry..eat more porridge yayy...lol..Though We Scots 'tend to like Ours with a fair shake o' the salt cellar..will have to cut THAT down Methinks..See what Nurse has to say..mind You She's just 5ft 0 and as broad as She's long,so She should be sympathetic :~)

Aye You're right of course Robert,We're all responsible for Our Own health, and I'll take advice on improving Mine without statins which seem to do more harm than good from what I've heard and read.

Don't know anything about good/bad cholesterol Julie,but I suppose I soon will.
