Bread - the staff of life

Or is it? From an early age, I have loved breads, but Mrs Dobra (obergruppenfuehrer of food) says I should cut down as it is no good for me.
Seeing as bread has been a staple for thousands of years, any suggestions for alternative please? Pass the bread knife.....

We don't eat a lot of bread, less than a slice a day, but I do like potatoes which is also starch.

Well what about bread is the problem ? you can make or buy gluten free bread if you have problems with gluten. If it's weight you worry about then only cutting down will really help.
We use wraps (tortilla) for some sandwiches these days really nice with scrambled egg in them, and you don't need butter with them so they work out less calorific and I don't believe they have yeast so if yeast is your problem then they would work.

Wholemeal bread is good for you I make my own.

There isn't really an alternative to bread, it is the accompaniment to so many things. I would cut out something else and still eat bread though I don't eat a lot once a day usually at lunch time.

Re: Bread - the staff of life

I used to make Sourdough bread, which, if you are going to eat any bread is probably the only bread you should eat because the fermentation process breaks down some of the anti-nutrients. You also mention it being a staple for thousands of years - Sourdough bread was, not the frankenstein stuff you buy now (modern yeast is only a few decades old).

Go back further in human history, and grains were only introduced 10,000 years ago - so a species appropriate diet is actually without grains/bread. The Palaeolithic diet is the most species appropriate diet
