There used to be a 'glass animal man' here in Brighton for some years - had a shop and his work-shop was set beside the shop window so passers-by could actually see him working.

It is fascinating to watch articles being made from glass. We have people who work making glass articles here too. Last year I bought a glass swan vase whilst at a local medieval market. I watched the man make it and waited until it was ready for me. He always had crowds round his stall and very many orders for his products.

There were quite a few shops up and down in holiday resorts where you could see the glass-blowers at work. The one I saw at Blackpool in the late sixties used to make swans out of glass tubes which he sealed at one end and blew into from the other end to make the swan's body, The sealed end was then stretched and shaped into its neck and the unsealed end curved slightly upwards to form its tail before being removed from the blow pipe. This end was left open so that you could fill the swan with coloured water if you chose.

Sadly, skills like this seem to have all but disappeared.

There is a shop in Whitby where you can watch the man work the glass. He made me a tabby cat and four kittens in no time at all. It was fascinating to watch.

I admire any skilled craftsman whatever the job.

As a child in Derbyshire I loved watching my uncle pleaching (called laying these days) a hedge to perfection, the finished item is a joy to behold.
