BOOM, breaking the sound barrier c1950s

As I approach 70,my mind increasingly goes back to my childhood in the 1950s
Today I recalled the "Breaking of the sound barrier"

WE'd be sat indoors looking out the window watching a plane fly over very fast and hearing an earthshaking, window shaking, door rattling BOOM.
Can anyone tell me what that was all about & why don't we hear it these days

It was Concorde, it stopped flying the Atlantic in 1974 I think.
This will tell you all about it.

I flew in Concorde, supersonic up the North Sea to Copenhagen for the day and then back again in the evening after six hours sightseeing. I seem to remember we were at Mach 2. An unforgettable experience, the food was wonderful and acceleration on take-off thrust you back in your seat. Fabulous.

Yes, the sound barrier was 1st broken by American WW2 fighter ace, Chuck Yeager in 1947 at Edwards AFB in California.
A year later the British duplicated that in Nov. 1948 using a DH-108 Swallow. It is possible that later flights is what you heard as a child.
If you have not seen the film, "The Right Stuff" I think you would enjoy it, as it covers the 1st breaking of the sound barrier and continues through the end of the Mercury space program. Thrilling film.
