How can the police, who are certainly more out of touch and less streetwise than the general public come out with such an ignorant statement?

Ely will no doubt be very similar to other cities in that they will have those who are genuinely homeless and others who are screwing the public for money and then be picked up in flash cars at the end of their day on the streets.

It's a shame that the homeless are missing out due to those phoney scavengers and the police are not helping by being so ridiculous with their comments.

Completely agree. And many homeless are invisible they are hiding from society rather than face abuse so police are very very wrong IMO

Whilst I would donate to a charity who supports the homeless, I would never in a million years give money to anyone on the streets, that would be crazy!

Not all homeless beg. Tbh a blanket or thick towel or coat is a better thing to give to them T.

I am not saying they do, however as you can't work out who is genuine, best to leave it to homeless charities to sort them out.

If they don't need a blanket they are likely not genuine, it's quickest way to tell IMO

Somehow I get the feeling they want cash rather than towels or blankets .

There are plenty of homeless charities about, i know in Liverpool the Council say ........ "No second night out" and promise to find anyone a bed for the night. The homeless charities are often on the radio asking listeners to bring them, unwanted blankets & coats. The real homeless can go as often as they want to pick up things.
The thing about these overnight hostels is, you often hear stories about how dangerous they are, and so some homeless feel safer sleeping on the street.
