Ooops - it is not a good idea ...

... to put 3 x slices of toast under the grill - and then come in here to check for new threads/posts !

I now have three chunks of charcoal and a kitchen full of blue smoke !!

Not a good look for your kitchen ST. The last time I went to make toast in the toaster, I found a forgotten slice in there that had been there a couple of weeks.

Done the same thing Monday night, put the mince on to simmer away, put the tatties on to boil and settled down for a quick read, only I had put the mince onto boil instead and ended up with a burnt pan

ST, I have done that in the past! You get so engrossed, so now I put the timer on!

It’s the smell of burned toast that is horrible and it lingers for ages!

I can remember once putting the kettle on and accidentally plonking a tea towel down which held down the switch. When I went into the kitchen half an hour later, it looked like the Mull of Kintyre - plus one ruined kettle.

Grills can be really quick too. Can hardly afford to take my eyes off ours when doing toast.

When cooking, I have multiple timers - one for the meat, another for the vegetables and one for the rice, pasta - whatever I am cooking. This works every time for me as previously I would put a pizza in the oven, note that it was 35 minutes, but then get engrossed in the internet, forgetting completely about the now nuked pizza.

Actually, I quite like burnt toast.
