I come from a long line of Welsh Miners although of my 81 years, for 75 of them I have lived in England. I had a wartime education and took an electrical apprenticeship on leaving Grammar School. National service was still around in my youth and as I did not want to go in either the army or the air force, I joined the Royal Navy at seventeen and stayed in there until my 25th birthday. While in the RN I met and married my late 1st wife and we had three children, two sons and a daughter, all of whom are now old enough to join this forum ...my wife died prematurely of multiple brain tumours at the age of only 59.
During my time with the RN, I served in submarines for five years, not the nuclear type but the old diesel/electric boats.
On leaving the navy I got a job with Kodak Ltd as an electrical engineer and I stayed with them until 1964 when the wanderlust in my blood started stirring and I went into electrical engineering sales as a representative which quickly escalated into sales management.
When my first wife died i was totally devastated for a while and thought my world had come to an end. My children helped me to get through this bad time im my life and eventually I met and married my present wife.
I retired in 1996 and since then we have holidayed extensively in America and Europe. We both learned to play golf when we first retired and it is still a game that we enjoy.
My wife and I are founder members of our local 'Big Band Society', that has been going for 5 years and I love giving the occasional presentation there.
I have recently become a member of PROBUS and that has widened our social activities.
