Yes, a thought provoking article but we try & think of creatures & not bother them. If I'm walking my dog & she begins getting too nosey in a particular hole (we live in the country), I pull her away. When our cat goes outside on his long leash he wears a bell.

I've heard rats can be 'taken care of' with potato flakes. Whether that damages other wildlife, I doubt it because the potato flakes would've already swelled.

I'm not saying we're perfect of course, but we try & be mindful of as many creatures as we can.

Ooops, did I mention we do keep 'pet' rats?
