Voting is Tight
I thought you might be interested in how the results of the Federal Eden-Monaro by-election are turning out.
The popular local member resigned for health reasons, he held the seat for Labor against the trend in the last federal election. In fact the seat was considered a bellwether seat as it previously had always gone to the side that formed government
On first preference votes the Liberals candidate is ahead with 38% of the votes cast to Labors 36%. In the UK she would have won the seat (ie first past the post voting).
Australia has a preferential system of voting where a candidate must get 50% + one vote to win and after preferences are distributed it is very likely the Labor candidate will win 51% to 49%
The Shooters, Fishers and Farmers party and the HEMP party made big gains.
