Opiates and the arts.

I was reading a piece my daughter was writing for her art's class. One thing I thought interesting was that after a class discussion, the consensus was that the truly great poetry, art and prose are absent nowadays due to a lack of availability of the opiates in their many forms.

Interesting nes pas?

Re: Opiates and the arts.

Well, look at Bob Dylan. All of his early poetry/lyrics were written whilst he was spaced out!

Indeed it was. It was fine until the "psychadelic era" in the late 60s when folk were advocating free love and wondering what those pink ephalumps were on the ceiling!

Even earlier than that, look at Coleridge et al. And the artists in Paris during the bohemian period all stoned on Absynthe.

Oh yes, that's true, but I don't think they realised back then just what it was that gave them their "visions." Or perhaps they did.

Coca Cola originally put cocaine in their drinks before it was realised that the after effects could be dangerous.

Re: Opiates and the arts.

Back in those days it's amazing how many products used opiates.

Yes they did, without realising of course.

Before anaesthetics, they used heroine to knock folk out of it, and of course other opiates as well, such as nitrous oxyide (laughing gas), and others.

Re: Opiates and the arts.

Countries, including this one are awash with opiates and we still have drug abusers producing (ART) Amy Whinehouse being a prime example. Give me a break.

I'm not sure the hard drugs of today produce the same effects of say laudanum.
