Re: How old were you.....
I left school when just 15. I wanted to teach domestic science as it was once called but because I was a good cook and housekeeper (I was cooking the evening meal for the family when I was 9 and cleaning the entire house with my sister ) my step mother said I would have to leave school and look after the house and she would pay me a shilling a week (she worked and was a 'fashion buyer').Re: How old were you.....
Left school at 16 and started work 2 weeks after I left. My first job was at a Weaving Factory in the office-used to do wages, typing and clerical work. I hated that job especially on a Friday when I had to take the wages round and had to go up and down the aisles in between the weaving looms to people. The noise was incredible - but I did learn how to lip read I was paid £2.5 shillings a week which I gave to my mum and she used to give me 5 shillings back for spending money
