Avocado plant

About 4 years or so ago we panted an avocado stone and it's done very well, nearly 3 foot tall now, and we are wondering if it would grow outdoors or if we need to keep it inside.

Anyone tried hem outside ? did they do well ?

Re: Avocado plant

I grew mine from a seed Julie and it is growing outside but our night winter temperature does not drop below 5C. It is about 4m tall and started bearing fruit after 8 years.

Re: Avocado plant

Our temperatures can go down much lower than that, well into the minuses in a cold snap. I am not really expecting fruit as we don't have the season for it, just hoping I can put it out before it takes over the hall way !

Re: Avocado plant

We grew two indoors from seed when we lived in Hampshire. When they reached over 6 feet tall, we donated them to a local wildlife park that had a restored Victorian hothouse. They grew nicely in it, but I understand that they need this sort of heat to survive. So, I don't think it would grow outdoors.

Re: Avocado plant

It won't survive outdoors in the UK. It needs at least a Mediterranean climate.

Re: Avocado plant

OK thanks it will have to move to the living room I think, the hall has suited it but when Elsie knocks it over every time we go out I thought it was time to have a bit of a change.
