Having your Pig and eating it.

Well here’s one cruel idea that was nipped in the bud. With meat being scarce in Germany after the First World War a Veterinary surgeon/Farmer came up with a method of taking rashers off pigs while they were still living.
Lard From Live Pigs (1921) The Berliner Illustrirte Zeitung reported that a German farmer had developed a method of obtaining lard from live pigs by operating on the pigs to remove the rashers, then bandaging the pigs up and letting them heal, the operation could be repeated three times a year. The idea was never adopted because of objections by both the cruelty to animals and the bacon industries lobbies (strange bedfellows methinks)

I should think not, imagine the poor Pigs condemned to a life of surgery.

I despair of the human race at times and sadly this isn't the worst I have seen done to animals

That's hideously cruel! How could anyone even imagine it let alone do it! I think I feel sick.

Recently saw a documnetary showing that this was a method adopted in remote areas by Japanese soldiers in WW11 on thier prisoners.

Distressing and horrible, I probably didn't need to know that but stories on cruelty have an enduring fascination like stories on torture of people also.
