Here's What We Can Look Forward Tomorrow!
What we can look forward to
We all know there are fireworks to come this week.
There seem to be so many different factions amongst our MP’s and the Government, it's enough to make your eyes swivel!
Don’t know about anyone else, but my limited understanding of what is going on in that madhouse is as I see it below.
(please let me know if I have got this wrong). So here for the rest of you who have also gone cross-eyed, is what is going to happen tomorrow with amendments....
THERESA MAY - REFUSAL TO BUDGE FROM HER BREXIT POSITION.
Theresa May’s biggest obstacle for her deal for Brexit is the requirement that the UK stay close to the EU to avoid a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Andrea Jenkyns has suggested scrapping the hated Backstop altogether to get the deal though.
PROBLEM - The EU and Ireland refuse to change one single thing regarding the withdrawal agreement which contains the Backstop Agreement, of which was agreed by Theresa May but rejected by an overwhelming majority of MP’s.
Tomorrow, Tuesday 29th January 2019, is when Theresa May presents her alternative plan regarding the problem of the Backstop, in which she hopes to gain backing from the majority of her government which includes Brexit backing MP’s such as Jacob Rees-Mogg and Boris Johnson. That should be interesting to see,
YVETTE COOPER AND NICK BOLES - DELAY TO ARTICLE 50.
Next, we have Labour’s Yvette Cooper and Nick Boles calling for Amendments which basically means the two of them wanting a vote on seizing control of Parliament, which will result in them seizing control of Brexit itself. They are asking Parliament to vote to change its own rules so that, for one day only, it can debate a bill which would delay our Brexit date for leaving on 29th March 2019 and require Theresa May to seek an extension of Article 50 until the end of 2019. There is a supposed great deal of support, even from some of May’s own Remain supporting MP’s.
PROBLEM - Apart from MPs voting how May and Corbyn ask them to, it will be interesting to see if Brexit hating John Bercow, will allow this to go ahead. The odds are that he will be only too keen to let this happen.
ANDREW MORRISON AND SIR GRAHAM BRADY - SCRAP THE BACKSTOP
Tory backbencher Andrew Morrison has submitted two amendments that call for the Irish Backstop, which almost everyone rejected, to be scrapped, or at least rewritten, One calls for a time limit to be inserted into the agreement, the other is for it to be replaced by ‘alternative arrangements’.which would make it more palatable to its opponents in the Conservative Party.
Andrew Morrison’s first amendment says she goes back to Brussels and tells them that the Backstop must be re-written..
The Second Amendment is co-sponsored by Sir Graham Brady which basically tells the EU that they wanted to know what the House of Commons would deem acceptable - and that is it.
PROBLEM - The EU and Ireland point-blank refusal to cooperate over the Backstop.
CORBYN - LABOUR’S CUSTOM UNION OR SECOND REFERENDUM
Corbyn is demanding that Parliament hold a vote on different options. His amendment specifies two - staying in a Customs Union with the EU (which is what he wants) and a second Referendum.
PROBLEM - If Corbyn’s name is on it, Not many Tories would back it, as he is angling for a General Election.
HILARY BENN - INDICATIVE VOTES
Labour’s Hilary Benn wants a series of free votes on the Brexit options,(recommended by his committee (Brexit Committee). This includes a Customs Union but not the Labour model.
PROBLEM - He would need Labour to back him.
DOMINIC GRIEVE - GIVE PARLIAMENT CONTROL
Demanding a second Referendum. Wants six days debate over February and March when backbench MPs are in control. The last date would be 26th March, just three days before we officially leave the EU. This would give MPs the power to direct the next steps and could provide for a last- ditch attempt to avoid a no-deal Brexit.
PROBLEM - Would require Labour to support it, It has already been signed by more than 50 MPs.
CAROLYN SPELMAN AND JACK DROMEY - RULE OUT NO DEAL.
Tory and Labour MP’s joined forces here to propose an amendment that rules out a no-deal Brexit.
PROBLEM - This, unfortunately for Brexit supporters, has a very high chance of being passed. Our best negotiating weapon and it is in danger of being voted out of contention.
RACHEL REEVES - ARTICLE 50 EXTENTION
Calling on Theresa May to seek an extension to the Article 50 exit process if she hasn’t gotten a deal through Parliament by 26th February.2019.
PROBLEM - Needs Labour to back it.
STELLA CREASY AND LISA NANDY - CITIZENS’ ASSEMBLY
Want an extension of Article 50 to allow a 250-member so-called citizens’ assembly - selected to consider Brexit and make recommendations. Gordon Brown has publicly backed this.
PROBLEM - Chance of getting through is very low as neither Tory or Labour support it.
VINCE CABLE - SECOND REFERENDUM
Is asking the Government to prepare for a second Referendum on Brexit.
PROBLEM - Chance of getting through is very low. Only been signed by LibDems and is unlikely to be even called.
Well, there they are. That is far more than enough for me to take in, don't know about you. Should be a very busy, noisy day in and outside of the Commons tomorrow.
